The publication accompanies the exhibition READ, organized in 2023–24 by Kunsthalle Praha as the first major presentation of Elmgreen & Dragset’s work in the Czech Republic. Reflecting on the relationship between books and artmaking, the exhibition is designed as a minimalist modern public library, questioning our ties to physical books and knowledge in the digital era. Within and between custom-made bookshelves, Elmgreen & Dragset present new and recent sculptures alongside works by contemporary artist colleagues and key pieces from the Kunsthalle Praha collection. The show encompasses performance, video, collage, painting, sculpture, and installation art.
The extensive exhibition catalogue features contributions from renowned scholars and a curatorial text by Elmgreen & Dragset, covering themes from the Czech history of samizdat publishing to contemporary challenges facing books, libraries, and freedom of speech in the digital age. This richly illustrated volume documents the dynamic interplay of language, books, and art unique to the READ project.
The catalogue will be available from 13th February 2025.
