Detailed information

Product detailed description

Rotrekl is the first comprehensive monograph on painter and illustrator Teodor Rotrekl (1923–2004), known primarily for his science fiction illustrations. Editor Tomáš Pospiszyl maps his experiments with spatial assemblages, combinations of painting and photography, and pop art montage techniques, which heralded new media in Czech visual art.

The book also analyzes the cultural environment of socialist Czechoslovakia in the 1950s and 1960s, when Rotrekl exhibited publicly in accordance with the political ideals of the time and, after 1968, remained a staunch communist despite the ban. It examines the contemporary functions of popular educational illustration, the ideological dimension of science fiction, and the relationship between Rotrekl's work and international pop art.
