This catalogue accompanies the first major retrospective exhibition of artist couple Anna-Eva Bergman and Hans Hartung. Bergman (1909–1987), who was of Swedish-Norwegian origin, was a pioneering abstract artist who drew deep inspiration from landscapes and natural forms. Hartung (1904–1989), born in Germany, was crucial in the development of what came to be known as gestural or informal art.

The publication follows the lives of Bergman and Hartung, covering their initial meeting in the 1920s, their more than ten-year separation and eventual reunion in 1952, up to their deaths in the 1980s. It features drawings, masterpiece paintings, mutual gifts, archival documents and photographs, many of which have never been seen before. For the first time, their shared thematic interests, including nature, the cosmos, music and more, are shown in tandem, revealing a shared artistic life.

The catalogue contains an extended essay exploring the themes of the exhibition by curator Pierre Wat and director of the Fondation Hartung-Bergman Thomas Schlesser; an in-depth look at the artists’ relationship to music by curator Theo Carnegy-Tan; an interview with AWARE founder Camille Morineau and writer and art critic Catherine Millet; and a literary essay by art historian Pauline Mari.
