Product detailed description
(Ne)zapadám na Západ is a personal and visually striking graphic novel by Barbora Viletová that follows the story of Věra, a young woman from a small town who leaves to study art in the West. Instead of the bohemian life she dreamed of, however, she is confronted with reality: different expectations, a different environment, and a sense of rootlessness. Věra gradually transforms from an “ordinary girl” into a “stranger.”
Her experiences reflect not only the everyday situations associated with living abroad, but also the broader social context, such as the atmosphere surrounding Brexit. The author sensitively captures the process of losing illusions and finding a new place in the world.
The book also includes a separate booklet titled Věra’s Guide to Culture Shock, which complements the main story with a lighthearted and humorous take on practical and personal insights into life in a foreign country. The publication thus straddles the line between autobiographical storytelling and the shared experiences of an entire generation.
