Barta Board – Gregor Hildebrandt

We present to you a limited edition of one hundred skateboards in cooperation with Gregor Hildebrandt and The Skateroom platform.

The original image printed on the boards was created using the rip-off method, in which a positive and negative of the same image form a composite. For this technique, Gregor Hildebrandt uses magnetic tape from carefully selected cassettes, which he attaches using a fixative and then tears off again, applying the rest to the second image in the pair. The first of the original pair of paintings was printed on this limited edition of one hundred boards and the second on an edition of 25 boards, which are also all signed by the artist himself.

Songs recorded on the cassette tapes that Gregor Hildebrandt created include "Madonna's Dickdarm" by Die Ärtz and "Can You Tell Me One Thing" by The Organ. Both songs refer to Gregor's adolescence, skateboarding, and the freedom that goes along with it.

The board is made out of North American maplewood, which is a high-quality hardwood ideal for skateboard production. If you don't want the skateboard just hanging on the wall, rest assured you can immediately hit the streets with it after adding basic skateboard equipment to it.

THE SKATEROOM

"We value skate, art and social change."

Based in Brussels, The Skateroom has been working with the most influential contemporary artists, museums, and foundations since 2014. Their collaborations often result in original collections of skateboards that in the past have featured the works of many artists, including Keith Haring, Roger Ballen, Cindy Sherman, and JR and Nobuyoshi ARAKI. A portion of the proceeds from each collaboration goes to a pre-selected charity project focused on education and skateboarding. And their collaboration on the Gregor Hildebrandt collection is no different, part of whose profits will go to support Skateistan, a non-profit organisation that offers skateboarding in combination with creative education. It's a safe space for all children who are often excluded from sporting and educational opportunities. Especially girls, children with disabilities, or children from low-income families or areas affected by war and civil unrest. In Skateistan, they can continue to hone their skills, have fun, and overcome social barriers.

Gregor Hildebrandt

Kunsthalle Praha presented the first solo exhibition of Gregor Hildebrandt, A Blink of an Eye and the Years are Behind Us as a part of the programme of solo exhibitions by major living artists. Working mainly with analogue sound storage mediums, the German artist creates sculptures, installations, and paintings with materials such as compression moulded vinyl, audiotapes on canvas, cassette shells or chess pawns. Hildebrandt’s work makes formal references to Minimalism and Abstract expressionism, it is also nourished by a multitude of literary, cinematographic, musical and architectural inspirations. These cultural sources trigger both collective and personal memories. Gregor Hildebrandt is currently living in Berlin and since 2015 he has been a professor of painting and graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 2016, he won the prestigious Falkenrot Preis award and in 2018, together with his partner, artist Alicja Kwade, he founded Grzegorzki Records, a label that supports young emerging musicians.
