Product detailed description
An evening at the card table in the spirit of the Jazz Age. The 1920s and 30s belonged to fashion, cocktails and parlour games. Whist, spades, gin rummy and bridge were played alongside poker and twenty-one, often at home, among friends and in carefully chosen attire. For the young generation, an evening spent over cards was also a gesture of defiance against Prohibition.
Art Deco Playing Cards recalls this era through its visual language. It contains two decks of 54 cards decorated with fashion illustrations by George Barbier, one of the most distinctive illustrators of his time, whose line and colour defined the aesthetic of Art Deco.
The cards are housed in a gold-trimmed gift box with a pull-out drawer and an individual box for each deck. They suit game nights and gatherings alike, and equally appeal to collectors who appreciate design rooted in culture and history. They also make a fitting gift for lovers of art, fashion and the 1920s.
