Soir (Evening) is a typical example of the way Annette Messager works with opposites. She places the soft and familiar beside the cold and almost industrial, joining a soft toy with metal and netting. It is precisely such "bad marriages", as she herself calls her combinations of different elements, that are characteristic of her work.

The motif of the net appears repeatedly in Messager's work and refers, among other things, to her childhood memories of growing up in a seaside town, where she encountered fishermen and their nets. In her works, ordinary materials and objects turn into images that can be at once playful, fragile and slightly unsettling.

The T-shirt has a unisex cut and is made from 100% organic cotton with GOTS certification. The embroidery gives the motif a form that differs from the original work, but preserves its characteristic tension between softness and hardness.

Annette Messager

Annette Messager (*1943) is one of the leading French artists of our time. In her work she combines photography, drawing, collage, object-making and installation, often using materials and objects from everyday life. She is interested in the body, memory, gender, desire and social ideas of femininity.

Her work is characterised by the joining of seemingly incompatible elements. Humour, play and tenderness can turn in an instant into unease or irony. Messager herself speaks of "bad marriages" – combinations of things, words and meanings that would not normally make sense together.
