Detailed information

Product detailed description

The Birds in Flight tote bag was created on the occasion of the exhibition The Battle Between YES and NO at Kunsthalle Praha and draws on recurring motifs in the work of William Kentridge. Birds in motion appear throughout his practice as powerful symbols of freedom, transience, and the fluid nature of identity, while also reflecting the human urge to define and categorize the world.

Rather than offering precise representation, Kentridge uses gestural marks and expressive silhouettes. His birds are not fixed forms but traces of movement – capturing fleeting moments and the passage of time. The motif also echoes his printmaking approach, where each line records the act of making itself.

Combining a striking artistic motif with everyday functionality, the tote also features subtle Kunsthalle Praha branding on the reverse. A thoughtful piece for those who want to carry contemporary art into daily life.

William Kentridge

William Kentridge (*1955, Johannesburg) is one of the most influential contemporary artists. His multidisciplinary practice spans drawing, printmaking, film, animation, theatre, and installation, exploring the relationship between image, time, and memory.

Deeply shaped by the political and historical context of South Africa, particularly apartheid, his work addresses themes of power, injustice, collective memory, and human responsibility. He often works through fragmentation, repetition, and shifting meaning.

Drawing remains central to his practice as a process in flux – images are never fixed but constantly erased, redrawn, and transformed. This openness gives his work a distinctive and enduring relevance.
