This is the second volume of the successful trilogy about slavery and the battle to end it in the eighteenth century. It is 1787. Joseph and Alma have finished their journey tracking the sailing ship The Sweet Amelie  and its unrivalled treasure to Saint-Domingue. However, Alma has only one objective: to find her younger brother Lam. While she looks for him amongst the thousands of slaves fighting to survive on sugar cane plantations and cotton fields in Louisiana, Joseph recrosses the Atlantic. There is talk of uprisings in London and the power of Versailles is weakening in France. Although Alma and Joseph had to separate, their individual paths continue to remind them of what links them. This is the second part of a big story about the things that are the most important – mainly about freedom: both external freedom and the inner one that we carry within ourselves, our own freedom as well as the freedom of others.
