Product detailed description
Loft Law. The Last of New York City's Original Artist Lofts is the debut photography book by Joshua Charow, documenting a hidden and fading world of New York’s protected artist lofts. Between 2021 and 2023, Charow visited over 75 artists still living under the protection of the Loft Law—an act passed in 1982 that granted rent stabilization and legal status to thousands of creatives residing in repurposed commercial spaces.
The result is a deeply human archive of raw, authentic artist studios scattered across neighborhoods like Soho, Tribeca, and the Bowery. Armed with a map of remaining buildings, Charow knocked on doors, conducted interviews, and captured interiors rarely seen by the public. His photographs reveal environments that are both personal and timeless—spaces where art, memory, and architecture intertwine.
The book features portraits and stories from iconic figures including Ken Jacobs, Flo Jacobs, Phill Niblock, Carmen Cicero, and Sumayyah Samaha, among many others. With writing by the artists themselves, Loft Law is not only a visual document but also an emotional tribute to resilience, community, and creative freedom in a changing city.
