Detailed information

Product detailed description

Is Prague still beautiful, extraordinary and enchanting? Have its charms been trampled underfoot by the millions of tourists rushing along the cobblestones from Prague Castle across Charles Bridge to Old Town Square and back again? Have its old houses and beautiful squares become nothing more than empty shells filled with cheap souvenirs?

Prague is a city of towers, hills, gardens, narrow streets, houses, pubs, secrets, stories, memories, people, animals and statues. A city on a river, where every building, every staircase, every square and every stone has a story to tell. This Is Prague invites you to see the city with fresh eyes.

Join illustrator Míša Kukovičová and writer Olga Černá on a journey across Prague's bridges and islands, up its hills and observation towers, through parks and gardens, from the city centre to its outer neighbourhoods. Find out how many bridges cross the Vltava, which house the devil punched a hole in, what people grow on Libeň Island and how far you can see from the Žižkov Television Tower. You can even discover where to find the best Czech open-faced sandwiches.

Along the way, you'll encounter a man who turned into a beetle, the legendary Golem, the story of wartime hero Sir Nicholas Winton, the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich and a resourceful president who found a shortcut through Prague Castle. History, legends, everyday life and unexpected curiosities come together in a book that shows just how much there is to discover in a familiar city. Because in Prague, anything is possible – as you'll soon find out.

Baobab Bookshop in Tábor

Baobab is a small family-run publishing house founded at the turn of the millennium in Prague’s Vinohrady district by Juraj Horváth and Tereza Horváthová. What began as a passion for artist’s books and bibliophile editions has grown into one of the leading Czech publishers of illustrated books for children.

The name refers to the baobab tree – a symbol of resilience, creativity, and community. Like the tree, their publishing work provides shelter for stories and connects generations through imagination and craftsmanship.

Baobab focuses on contemporary illustrated books, collaborating with prominent illustrators, writers, and designers. Their books balance poetic storytelling, visual inventiveness, and educational value while maintaining a distinctive artistic voice.

Beyond publishing, Baobab organizes cultural events and exhibitions, such as the Baobabí léto and Tabook festivals, and runs bookshops and galleries in Prague and Tábor. They foster a creative community around illustration, literature, and independent publishing.

In 2011, Baobab founded the Miroslav Šašek Foundation, reviving his legendary This is... travel series and supporting illustrators through annual grants and residencies. The publishing house continues to bridge heritage, education, and contemporary visual storytelling.
