Product detailed description
A prolific photographer, portraitist, documentalist, and writer, Lucia Moholy (1894–1989) defies categorization. Active both in avant-garde circles and the field of information science, she advanced an expansive understanding of visual reproduction. Unlike previous publications that limited her achievements to five years at the Bauhaus, Lucia Moholy: Exposures presents the full breadth of her writings and photographs for the first time.
Extensive essays drawing on new archival discoveries reveal her early life in turn-of-the-century Prague; involvement in radical social movements of 1920s Weimar Germany; emigration to London, where her circle included the Bloomsbury Set; wartime work in microfilm and scientific documentation; UNESCO projects in Turkey; and her reception by a younger generation of artists such as Jan Tichý. Across all these contexts, the publication shows how Moholy’s interdisciplinary approach anticipated photography’s post-analogue future.
