BOHEMIA: History of an Idea, 1950–2000
Since its origins in mid-19th-century Paris, the idea of bohemianism has been a vital part of artistic identity. Beyond the Latin name for the Czech lands, “bohemia” came to define a lifestyle of radical freedom, artistic devotion, and often voluntary poverty. This exhibition explores bohemian scenes from the second half of the 20th century across cities such as Paris, New York, London, San Francisco, Vancouver, Tehran, Zagreb, Prague, and Beijing. Rather than a nostalgic look back, it investigates how bohemian ideas evolved, differed, and connected globally. Featuring 39 artists including Alice Neel, Wolfgang Tillmans, Nan Goldin, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Bijan Saffari, Martin Wong, Stan Douglas, David Wojnarowicz, Roy Arden and more, many shown together for the first time – and many presented for the first time in the Czech Republic.
