Elmgreen & Dragset - Reversed Crucifix

Elmgreen & Dragset’s sculpture Reversed Crucifix defies the standard presentation of the crucifixion as seen in religious iconography. In the artist duo’s version Christ has been replaced by an ordinary, contemporary male person, who is placed in a reversed position on the cross: the front of his body faces the crucifix and his back is turned towards the viewer. His hands are not nailed, but are instead tied to the cross, similar to the manner in which the two thieves on either side of Christ have been historically depicted.

The limited edition Reversed Crucifix was created in a series of 50 signed and numbered prints exclusively for the Kunsthalle Praha Design Shop. Elmgreen & Dragset

Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset have worked as an artist duo since 1995. In their work, they explore the relationship between art, architecture, and design, which they cleverly supplement with wit and provocative humour. Their works were exhibited in various biennials, for example in Bangkok (2018), Venice (2009, 2003) or Istanbul (2013, 2011, 2001), where they were also curators in 2017. Their works are part of a lot of art collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk or the Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo.
