Cabinet Of Electrical Curiosities – Mark Dion

When the former Zenger transformation station gradually became what's now the Kunsthalle Praha, many objects in the period between 1932 and the present day were found inside the building. Bulbs, batteries, electric motors, as well as the magazine ZEPOP are all artefacts that map the history of our building and the process of generation electricity from the 1930s to the present day.

Multimedia artist Mark Dion took these objects and made them into a cabinet of electrical curiosities, which can be seen as the only permanent exhibition in the Kunsthalle Praha. Dion also designed a print to coincide with the exhibition that comes in reddish-blue: a typical colour combination for him. The print is a copy of the curiosity cabinet sketch. The real cabinet is permanently exhibited on the 3rd floor of our gallery.

A limited edition of 50 signed and numbered prints was created with a certificate of authenticity accompanying each print. The frame is not included.

Mark Dion

This American artist applies his knowledge and interests in archaeology, ecology, and zoology into his works. He's known for his cabinets of curiosities, one of which he created for the Tate Gallery in London as part of the Tate Thames Dig project (1999). The resulting cabinet consists of artefacts found on the banks of the River Thames at the Tate Gallery (now the Tate Britian) and the future Tate Modern. Another equally important work, Neukom Vivarium (2006), is a permanent outdoor installation and at the same time an educational laboratory located in the Olympic Park of statues in Seattle, Washington.

Mark Dion is undoubtedly a prominent name in world conceptual art with a focus on installations. We're pleased that after exhibiting his works in such big-name galleries as New York's MoMa, London's Tate, or Paris's Centre Pompidou, you can also find his work in the Kunsthalle Praha.
